Revitalising Glebe Point Road
The project aims to implement
urban design improvements to provide a more vibrant, active and safe
public domain that will reinforce Glebe Point Road as the ‘main
street’ for Glebe.
Improvements include:
| traffic calming | |
| pedestrian safety | |
| cycle access | |
| new footpaths | |
| safety and security upgrades | |
| undergrounding of overhead cables | |
| public art |
The City has allocated $15 million for the streetscape upgrade works which will be the first stage in the revitalisation project. This will dovetail with Foley Park upgrade and the City’s broader social programs and marketing initiatives to build on the unique character of Glebe.

Street Trees
As part of the streetscape upgrade approximately 48 new trees will be planted. Of these, approximately 16 are replacing existing trees and 32 are new trees. The approved species, Simon's Poplar (Populus Simonii ), is in accordance with the City’s Street Tree Masterplan . In addition, five new Pear trees (Pyrus sp.) will be planted at the corner of Glebe Point Road and Parramatta Road.
In consultation with Glebe Public School, a number of boundary trees within the school grounds will be removed to improve the presentation of the school frontage and reduce the competition impacting the trees to be retained.

Public Art
Dr
Nigel Helyer - Wireless House - Public Listening Room
| Location - The Wireless House, Foley Park, Glebe | |
| The concept of a Public Listening Room appears to be unusual (to date artist research has not located a precedent). The approach is to embrace the unique function of the site and to repurpose the site to once again become a sonically active feature of the park. | |
| This artwork was endorsed by Council as part of the DA approval for the park upgrade. | |
| The physical works for this artwork will form part of Foley Park Upgrade |
Earth
verus Sky by Allan Giddy at the northern termination of Glebe
Point Road
| Location - Bicentennial Park Glebe - Two large Moreton Bay Figs. | |
| Concept - These two magnificent trees will be lit from near the path edge responding to the changing shades of the twilight evening skies. Powered by a wind generator to the lights will project the inverse light of the sunset colours. | |
| Council has endorsed this artwork and the design is currently being finalised | |
| The physical works for this artwork will be delivered separately to Glebe Point Road Upgrade |
Special
Place Glebe Public School Fence
On the recommendation of the independent review panel the artist Nuha Saad has worked with the streetscape design team and prepared a revised concept for the Glebe Public School fence (seen here). The revised concept is supported by the school and the Department of Education and has been endorsed by Council.
The design is currently being finalised for a formal agreement with the Department of Education and Glebe Public School.
The physical works for Glebe Public School Fence will be delivered as part of the Glebe Point Road Upgrade.
Undergrounding of cables
Energy Australia (EA) has
completed the design for undergrounding of power cables for both
the stages 1 & 2.
Works for undergrounding of power cables could not commence as per
the previous scheduled start date of February 2007, due to the
constraint on EA’s resources.
EA has asked Council to procure an EA accredited contractor from
open market to carry out the construction of these undergrounding
works.
These undergrounding works will be carried out along with the
major streetscape upgrade. City of Sydney is currently in the
process of obtaining a final agreement from EA.
Construction
Following the endorsement of
detailed design by Council, tenders for the construction of main
streetscape have been invited.
Construction works are likely to commence in July / August 2007
and completed by the 1st quarter of 2009.
