The eora people would gather here & woolloomooloo is derived from their language

a creek ran from the heights at what is now forbes street at taylor square toward the north west then turning north around francis street heading along what became stream street to the low point behind golsteins.

there still is a sandstone bridge located below the footpath & part of the road surface on the north side just after sprint digital.

the bridge is shown in the middle foreground of the picture opposite.

The displaced granted the land on the ridge to the east

macquarie granted the land on the ridge to prominent citizens

financial trouble forced sale of estate to Edward Riley 1822

the land was not released until the 1840s

the area was surveyed by mitchell as part of the new south head road which was 41 feet wide

The alignment being taken from the bridge shown above

the new street was quarried and formed ending at the junction of darlinghurst road & victoria street at what became known as queens cross & named william Street in honor of the king william iv
